American tennis superstar Serena Williams has given birth to her first child, a baby girl at a clinic in Florida.

The 35-year-old who is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian, was admitted to the St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach on Wednesday.

Her coach Patrick Mourataglou revealed on Twitter that Williams and her partner have become parents and congratulatory messages have been pouring in for the tennis legend.

"Congratulations @SerenaWilliams for your baby girl. I am so happy for you and I feel your emotion," he wrote.

"Btw... I wish you a speedy recovery... We have a lot of work ahead of us," he added.

Serena confirmed her pregnancy to the world in April after she uploaded a photograph on Snapchat with the caption "20 weeks."

She was about two months pregnant when she won her 23rd grand slam singles title at the Australian Open, one short of all-time record held by Australian Magret Court.

The world's highest-paid female athlete told Vogue magazine last month that she was planning to return to court and defend her title in Australia, where the year's first grand slam takes place between January 15 - 28, 2018.
