FIFA World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hope Solo on Thursday night announced her intention to run for the president of the U.S Soccer Federation.

Solo becomes the ninth candidate vying to replace Sunil Gulati who is not seeking a fourth term after the men's national team failed to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russia.

The 36 years old who last played for USA at the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio, made the announcement with a long Facebook note on her verified page, titled "Why I'm running for President of U.S Soccer."

"I know exactly what US Soccer needs to do, I know exactly how to do it, and I possess the fortitude to get it done," she said.

"I have always been willing to sacrifice for what I believe in and I believe there is no greater sacrifice then fighting for equal opportunity, integrity and honesty, especially in an organisation like the USSF that could give so much more to our communities across the nation."

She also becomes the second woman after Soccer United marketing president Kathy Carter seeking for the top job and has promised a winning culture and transparency in the federation.

She has played 202 times for U.S during her playing career, which spanned to 17 years, recording 153 victories and 102 clean sheets; not also forgetting to mention that she won two Olympics gold medals.

Although, Solo has not played for the Stars and Stripes since 2016, after been banned for six months for calling Sweden players "bunch of cowards" following a quarterfinal Olympics defeat.

All candidates have until Tuesday to get the required three nominations from delegates to officially join the race, with the election set to hold in February in 2018.
