Nigerian striker Henry Onyekuru could miss the 2018 FIFA World Cup after being ruled out of action for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
Onyekuru, 20, damaged his medial bond in Anderlecht's 1-0 victory against former club KAS Eupen on December 22nd in the Belgian league.
Further scans have showed that the injury the player loaned from Everton suffered is more serious than initially suspected and his coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck has suggested he faces a minimum of six months on the sidelines.
"He could be out for as long as six months," Anderlecht coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck told reporters.
This comes as a devastating blow for the Nigeria international who had high hopes of representing his country at the world cup finals in Russia.
He has been capped twice by the Super Eagles, in the 3-0 friendly win over Togo in June 2017 and the 1-1 draw with Algeria during the qualifiers for next year's event.
