Frenchman Abraham Kiprotich and Herpha Guta of Ethiopia have emerged winners of the 2018 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon long distance race.

Kiprotich who crossed the finished line of the 42 kilometer race after 2 hours, 15 minutes and 4 seconds, will take home the $50,000 prize money.

Herpha won the women's category with a time of 2 hours and 38 minutes. She will receive the same prize money as Kiprotich.

Despite an early morning rainfall, participants came out in their large numbers to take part in the race which started at the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.

During the prize presentation, Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode said: "We’re at the Bronze level of marathons, but we want to get it to the Gold level, in the next two years.

"We're tired of giving these trophies to the East Africans. We ’ll be committing resources to training our Nigerian athletes so they can win the marathon."
