Super Falcons assistant coach, Maureen Mmadu has said Nigeria can reach the final of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Women's Cup and possibly win the tournament.

Nigeria are set to compete in the first edition of the eight-nation sub-regional women's football competition in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire from the 14th to 24th of February.

The team will take on Benin Republic in their opening game on Thursday at the Robert Champroux Stadium, with Mmadu hopeful of a favourable outing for the Falcons.


"We are going there to do our best. The players are in high spirits and are also ready for the task ahead," she said on NAN.ng

"Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to female football. So, we will take each match as it comes with the aim of getting to the final and if possible win the title."

The Nigerian side will also play Senegal and Togo in Group B of the championship, while hosts Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic are drawn in Group A.

Meanwhile, the team comprising of 21 players along with head coach Thomas Dennerby, assistant coaches Wemimo Matthew and Mmadu, team doctor and physiotherapist yesterday arrived in Abidjan, venue of the WAFU Women's Cup.

While assistant coach Omobolanle Taiwo and team administrator Module Shabi will join the rest of the team tomorrow.
