President Muhammad Buhari has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria on their emphatic defeat of Cameroon's Indomitable Lions in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

The Eagles bounced back from a previous loss to South Africa to recording a heavy 4-0 win over the Lions courtesy of goals from Odion Ighalo, John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Buhari, in a series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle joined millions of soccer-loving Nigerians over the world in commending coach Gernot Rohr's men for their skillful and entertaining display against the current African champions.

"I join millions of football-loving Nigerians in applauding our Super Eagles for their skillful and entertaining display against Cameroon," the tweets began.

"Congratulations Super Eagles, on the impressive win. We are looking forward to you sustaining the momentum in the return leg.

"Football, like the NYSC, is a powerful unifying platform for us as a Nation. Today's victory is for all Nigerians, at home & in the diaspora.

The president also commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for their continued support and hospitality towards the senior national football team.

"Let me also commend the Akwa Ibom State Government for its continued support, and for the provision of excellent hosting facilities," the tweets ended.

The victory sees Nigeria cement their spot as leaders of Group B with nine points from three games and will next travel to face Cameroon in Yaoundé for the return leg on Monday, September 4.
