The inaugural West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Women's Cup served off yesterday with Ghana losing to hosts Côte d'Ivoire.

Dominique Thiamalé netted the solitary goal on the 50th minute as the Black Queens suffered a slim 1-0 loss to their Ivorian counterparts.

Missing influential captain Elizabeth Addo, the Ghanaians fought for an equaliser but were unable to breakthrough as the encounter finished in Côte d'Ivoire's favour.

Elsewhere, Burkina Faso in a superb fashion outclassed Niger Republic 5-1 to go top of Group A of the eight-nation tournament.

In a related news, Benin Republic have pulled out of the competition after the Beninese Football Federation (FBF) cited they were not ready to compete.

“The women’s national team is not yet competitive,” said FBF President Anjorin Moucharafou on JWSports1.com

“I understand their bitterness, that’s right. But you know, when you run a state business, you do not put sentiment.

“I want to impose the Benin label in football and so I have talked to the girls and told them that an appointment is made for next time.”

With the latest development, Mali have accepted to replace Benin in Group B which has reigning African champions Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.
