In a press conference held in Lagos on Wednesday, chairperson of the NWFL, Aisha Falode told the media the need for a "real champion" to be determine through the Champions Shield clash.

“For the first time in the history of women football in Nigeria the NWFL is introducing the Champions Shield, the two best teams will be fighting to become the real champion.

“This is the first time we will be having this in Nigeria, since we were inaugurated less than a year ago, we had to do everything possible to get the results o what we are seeing today.

“The Champions Shield is the curtain raiser for the new NWFL season, and is therefore the first silverware to be contested for by the two best teams in the league."

She also appreciated the Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode for fulfilling the promise he made, while adding that the Champions Shield football game will be seen as an opportunity to create awareness of the NWFL in the state.

“But I must specifically thanked the Lagos State government with the magnanimity of Governor Ambode in sponsoring this event. He made the promise some months ago and he has fulfilled the promise, I am grateful for this.

“It is also another opportunity for us to show the football loving Nigerian populace especially the people of Lagos, the beauty and quality of our women league."
