Nigeria youth international Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly set to cut short his loan spell at Belgian side Gent and return to parent club Liverpool.

British tabloid Daily Mail reports that Awoniyi who signed a contract extension at the Merseyside outfit last summer, will quit Gent this month for another club.

The Nigerian has failed to hit the net in 16 Belgian topflight league matches this term and with the arrival of Crystal Palace forward Alexander Sorloth, the 21-year-old may be dropped.

With Liverpool looking to ensure his growth and development, the Nigerian starlet will spend the remainder of the 2018-19 season away from Anfield.

Awoniyi joined the Reds on 31 August 2015 from Imperial Soccer Academy for a reported fee of £400,000 and was immediately shipped out on loan to FSV Frankfurt of Germany.

He helped Nigeria to winning the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, where he scored four goals during the competition and also won the 2015 African U20 Championship in Senegal.
