Francisca Ordega says it is time for Nigeria senior women's football side Super Falcons to be ranked amongst the best teams in the world.
Ordega who have played at two FIFA World Cup finals in 2011 and 2015, said the Super Falcons cannot continue to dominate Africa football only.
The Atletico de Madrid forward also stated that Africa women's football is developing by the day and other teams are beginning to close the gap on Nigeria.
"I feel good when people see us as the best team in Africa, but that is not enough. We really want to be recognized in the world, not just in Africa," Ordega said in a video on Spanish La Liga official Twitter handle.
"I can't say anything about the future, but now most teams in Africa are coming hard on us. They are not sitting and allowing Nigeria to be the best in Africa.
"They really want to come out and show their talents, their football is developing. So we can't relax because we are the best in Africa."
Nigeria have won eight Africa Women Cup of Nations titles since the AWCON began in 1998 but have struggled to replicate their dominance on the world stage.
The country failed to qualify from the group stage of their last four FIFA World Cups in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 after reaching the quarterfinals of the 1999 edition.
Looking at next year Nations Cup qualifiers en route the tournament in Ghana, Ordega wants to team engage in friendly games to prepare the players for the challenges ahead of them.
"We have to step up to the world. During the international break, I couldn't go to (Nigeria) because we had no games," the Benue-born soccer star added.
"I think if we get more games, it's going to help us, especially the players. It's going to help us in the world and not just in Africa.
"Next year we have a lot of qualifiers like the World Cup qualifiers. So we can't just relax. We really have to show that we are in the best and not only in Africa."
In the recent FIFA Women's World Ranking released last Friday, Nigeria's Super Falcons dropped two spots, from 35th to 37th position but are placed number one on the continent.
