President of South Africa Football Association, Danny Jordaan has said he is "excited" with the way women's football is developing in the country.

Jordaan made this disclosure while speaking with the senior women's national side, Banyana Banyana upon their arrival from Cyprus last Friday.

They were welcomed by Jordaan, National Executive Committee members Ria Ledwaba and Anastasia Tsichlas as well as SAFA CEO, Dennis Mumble.

The Sasol-sponspored team featured in the 2018 Cyprus Women's Cup and finished 6th out of 12 participating nations; after playing Slovakia, Hungary, Korea DPR and Belgium.

Their performances and results shows an improvement on the team, compared to their first outing in 2009 where they took sixth position out of eight teams.

Following their impressive display lately, the SAFA boss remains optimistic that the women's game will continue to grow at all level.

"I am very excited with the way our women's national teams are performing at the moment. Just recently the U20 bowed out of the World Cup qualifiers, but the U17 booked their ticket to Uruguay. Now we have the senior team, Banyana Banyana, going to Europe to compete against the best and give a good showing," said Jordaan on SAFA.net

"South Africa women's football is doing very well, but we don't stop here. I am quite impressed with your achievement. Just recently you faced Sweden, even though you lost, you showed that you can mix it up with the best in the game. Now what is needed is for us to go an extra mile and give it one last push so that we don't come back and say we nearly got it - now is the time to get it."

The South African side will now shift attention to their second and final round Africa Women's Cup of Nations qualifiers against the winners of the Lesotho/Swaziland tie in June.
