Last Thursday, Kenya Women's Premier League were handed a major boost after receiving a grant of Kshs 12m (approx. $120,000) from the country's football federation.

The move is aimed at promoting women's football in Kenya and it will see the 16 teams in the first division league pocketing Kshs 750,000 (approx. $7,400).

Speaking at the event held at the Football Kenya Federation head office at Goal Project, Karasani, FKF president Nick Mwenda said he hopes the clubs utilizes the money gotten from FIFA well.

"We are going to award every team in the Women Premier League 750,000 this year from the grant we are getting from FIFA. We sat with the clubs and they said if they receive the money it will go a long way in supporting the clubs. We have received half of the grants and we have passed over and we will do the same when we receive the remainder," he said.

This comes as a massive improvement for the league which is in line with the federation's assurance of professionalizing the women's game in the country.

Aside the grant; match day expenses of KWPL clubs including the lease of match venues, referees, security and ambulance services will now be catered for.
