Manchester United will compete in the 2018-19 Women's Championship in England after the FA granted them a place in the second-tier division.

This means that United will have a women's football team after 13 years, having scrapped their squad from the women's soccer game in 2005.

The club who have been heavily criticized for disbanding their women's team will join Charlton Athletic Women, Leceister City Women, Lewes FC Women and Sheffield United Women as the new five teams in the Championship next season.

United chairman Ed Woodward said: "The board is delighted that the FA has approved the application.

"Starting a professional team from scratch is challenging for rewarding and we will make every effort to provide the support and experience for the new women's team to be successful and to uphold the fine traditions of our great club."

Former England star and current assistant coach of the Lionesses, Casey Stoney who won 130 caps during her active days is expected to manage United women's team, which will be based at The Cliff, the club's historic training ground.

The decision to restructure the women's leagues was made by The FA Women's Football Board, following a detailed review and assessment, and it remains subject to appeal.

The FA's head of women's football, Baroness Sue Campbell, said: "Today's announcement is the result of two years of planning and a milestone within our delivery of The Gameplan for Growth strategy.

"The revised competition structure will positively impact on the delivery of the women's game across all levels, both on and off the pitch.

Both leagues will kick off on the weekend of September 8 and 9, with the opening matches of the Continental League Cup group stage serving off on the weekend of August 18 and 19.
