(Barbara Banda celebrates with her Zambian teammates at the COSAFA finals)
Zambia yesterday caused the first upset of the ongoing 2018 COSAFA Women's Championship by defeating tournament favourites Cameroon 1-0 at the Wolfson Stadium.
Heading into the game, many had tipped Cameroon to run over Zambia after they trounced Mozambique in their opener, but the Zambians stood firm and emerged victors at the end of the day.
The deciding goal was scored by Lushomo Mweemba from an excellent free-kick to break the heart of Cameroon and thereby sealing the win, which gave them a healthy six points.
With the victory, the She-Polopolo now leads in Group B ahead of their final match against Mozambique on Tuesday, while the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon will aim to redeem their image and qualify for the semifinals when they face winless Lesotho.
Namibia played out a barren draw with East African guests nation Uganda, in an encounter the two teams created meaningful scoring chances but could not finish off when it mattered the most.
Meanwhile, Mozambique bounced back from their opening day embarrassing loss to Cameroon to earn their first win of the competition with a 2-1 narrow defeat of Lesotho to keep their aspirations of making it to the last four alive.
Litseoana Maloro's leveller on the hour-mark stood out as a consolatory goal for Lesotho who bowed down to the Mozambicans, with Cidalia Cuta and Lucia Moçambique getting on the scorer-sheet.
The participating teams will take a day off on Sunday to rest, with action resuming on Monday when hosts and defending champions South Africa confronts Malawi.
Elsewhere, Botswana battles Madagascar; Zimbabwe will come up against Uganda as Groups A and C finals matches are decided in Nelson Mandela Bay.
